Thomas Houseago: Death's Sacred Mirror
Lévy Gorvy Dayan is thrilled to announce Thomas Houseago: Death’s Sacred Mirror, opening May 28 in London.
Curated by Houseago in the spirit of a cabinet of curiosities, the exhibition will unveil new sculptures by the artist alongside a selection of items ranging from ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Aztec artifacts to works by key modern and post-war artists such as Joseph Beuys, Louise Bourgeois, Lucio Fontana, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Marisa Merz, Meret Oppenheim, and Günther Uecker.
A highlight on display will be a new edition of Houseago’s Crystal No. 1 (2026), channeling the themes of beauty, contemplation, and femininity that run through the presentation.
Death’s Sacred Mirror is rooted in Houseago’s understanding of sculpture as fulfilling, through human history, a role of mysterious and sacred reflection. The presentation is titled after the obsidian mirrors of Aztec culture—an example of which will be on view. Considering such objects belonging to mythological and ritual traditions alongside modern artists’ experimentations with materiality, Houseago reveals his never-ending search for timeless aspects of the sculptural medium and his ongoing investigations of its legacies and possibilities.
Antiquities included in the exhibition are presented in collaboration with Rupert Wace and Charles Ede, London.
